Night Programs

Every evening begins with a daily recap using the CTSE logbook to record sail combinations, skills learned, plants and animals identified, and write a short entry in the ship’s log. Then we launch into the night program. Our evening programs are designed to be short, interactive and fun and are led by our instructing staff. Night programs available are:

Night Sail

As the sun sets beneath the west end of Catalina Island, the TOLE MOUR will cruise the surrounding waters. Your students will continue their exploration of sailing with a taste of life at sea. The students will also have the chance to help the crew anchor the boat.

Navigation II

Students play an interactive mystery game to determine where the TOLE MOUR is and where she is going tomorrow. Students read charts, use parallel rulers and dividers, and solve problems. This is a continuation of the first navigation lesson and an emphasis on the use of triangulation and GPS.

Introduction to Celestial Navigation

Instructors lead the students through identifying and taking sights on the constellations of the Catalina sky. They then work as a team to determine our position using the stars. Younger students get a simpler version focusing on the constellations and the north star.

Sea Chanties and Yarns

Sing traditional working songs of the sea with our instructors and learn the history and significance behind them. Stomp, clap, and rock the TOLE MOUR. The evening winds down with the telling of a salty story.

Ropework

Practical and fancy ropework projects will be taught to each student. They will first make rope, and then have the opportunity to make a monkey’s fist, sennit, turkshead, or eyesplice. These take home projects are great keychains, bracelets, and lanyards that parents love to see back at home.

Sailor’s Dance

Dance party at sea. Do a sailors jig. We provide the music, costumes, polka and jig lessons, Amazingly fun!

Around Cape Horn

View the actual footage of rounding Cape horn in the 20's with Irving Johnson. Irving shot this footage while he volunteered aboard the Peking-one of the last working great tall ships. This 45 minute movie is all in black and white and shown on our mess house top. The movie is projected on a sail! It feels like you are living the movie!

Bioluminescence/ Night splash

An overview of life light in the ocean and the creatures that produce it. In fall, take a night splash into the nocturnal world to see bioluminescence first hand. Lifeguard instructors lead the students in a plunge off the deck of the SSV TOLE MOUR. They use masks and to observe the water around them as it glows every time they move. No wetsuits are used, thus this program is offered in combination with bioluminescence only in the fall. Watch your students become surrounded by the life light of dinoflagellates.

Channel Islands Marine Science Slide Show

Seals, seal lions, fish, invertebrates, and more. A greatest hits collection of years of exploring Catalina and other Channel Islands. Hear the stories behind the shots. This program is a great option for your first night on board as it is introduces students to the algae, invertebrates, fish, and marine mammals that they will see in the water on their snorkel.

Algae Las Vegas

Watch your students furiously scanning the dichotomous key to try and find the name of the algae in their hands! During this game like program you will see your students beaming and giving hi fives over Algae! A huge favorite!

Marine Science Lab Tour (5 & 7 day trips only)

Visit the Catalina Island Marine Institute’s facility at Toyon Bay. Tall Ship instructors lead you on a guided tour through the Fish, Invertebrate, and Shark labs - complete with professional aquariums, exhibits, and touch tanks.

School Led Activity Night

Want an evening to do a school project, discussion, or journal assignment? Let us know and we will take care of everything!

ANCHOR WATCH

The students become part of the working crew aboard the TOLE MOUR and take turns standing an anchor watch throughout the night. The TOLE MOUR maintains a 24 hour watch manned by our deckhands, while on anchor watch your students will learn about taking bearings, identifying navigational lights, and doing hourly boat checks. This program is offered in addition to a night program and if selected on your program planner will give every student a chance to stand one hour of anchor watch on one evening during the trip.
